The story o f the depathologization of homosexuality, of its removal as a diagnosis from the handbook of psychiatric disorders called The           and Statistical Manual ofMental Disorders (DSM), is remark- able in many ways (among them: it was the first, and to date the only, time that a diagnosis was removed from the DSM as a result of a vote by the membership of the American Psychiatric Association) (Bayer 1 9 8 1 ) .
